The Up-coming Yantai Port

As one of the main pivotal ports in the coastal area of China, Yantai Port is located in the east of Shandong Peninsula, holding a strategic position at the outlet of Baihai Bay as well as the core area in the International Economic Circle in Northeast Asia, and overlooking Japan and South Korea across the sea.

On 22 Aug. 1861, Yantai Port was formally opened to the outside world. After 145 years, it has established itself into a modern port, consisting of four port areas, i.e.: (i) Zhifu Bay Port Area; (ii) Western Port Area; (iii) Penglai Port Area; and (iv) Longkou Port Area. Yantai Port has 75 berths in total, among those 35 berths are of over 10,000-DWT. The total quay length is 14,000 m, the maximum water depth is –20 m. The total value of the assets is amounted to be RMB 4.97 billion yuan, and the total amount of employees is over 13,000.

In the first half of 2006, the cargo throughput achieved by Yantai Port was 38.11 million tons, 31.1% higher than that in the corresponding period of 2005; the container traffic was 546,000 TEU, growing by a rate of 116%; the passenger traffic was 1.837 million (including an outbound traffic of 948,000), with an increasing rate of 11.6% and 13%. Several operational index such as the total cargo throughput, the container traffic and passenger traffic in Yantai Port have set new records in the corresponding period in the history. The total cargo traffic and container traffic are expected to be 80 million tons and 1.1 million TEU respectively in 2006; 160 million tons and 3 million TEU respectively in 2010; and 240 million tons and 7 million TEU respectively in 2020.

Zhifu Bay Port Area was opened for trade in 1861. At present there are 46 berths, 23 of which are rated above 10,000 DWT with the maximum water depth of –20 m. The wharf length is over 7,300 meters. This port area has a designed annual throughput capacity of 15.95 million tons, consisting of a warehouse area of 95,000 square meters, a storage yard area of 1.5 million square meters and a railway line of 26 kilometers. There are over 750 sets of cargo handling equipment and 34 vessels, with a assets value of RMB 3.2 billion yuan.

Longkou Port Area was built up in 1914, and opened to the outside world as one of the 1st Grade Ports in Dec. 1984. The quay length is over 5,000 m. Now there are 21 berths for cargo handling operation, including 5 berths of 50,000 DWT, 6 berths of 10,000 DWT and 6 ones of 5,000 DWT, with a designed annual capacity of 10.23 million tons. The storage yard and warehouse covering an area of 1.4 million square meters (the area of warehouse is 50,000 square meters). The public bonded warehouse covers an area of 34,000 square meters. The storage capacity of the bulk-grain tank is 100,000 tons, and the capacity of petroleum-industrial products tank is 610,000 cubic meters. The original value of the fixed assets is RMB 1.7 billion yuan.

The port facilities of Penglai Port Area were formally completed and put into operation in Dec. 1995. Now there are five berths, with the tonnage degrees of 35,000 DWT, 5,000 DWT and 3,000 DWT respectively (including two berths for Ro-Ro operation).

The Western Area of Yantai Port, which is under planning and construction now, is situated in the west of the city proper, as well as besides the northeast sea of Dajijia Village in Yantai Economic & Technological Development Zone (YETDZ), with a distance of 35 km on the sea and a distance of 30 km on land to Zhifu Bay. The total land area is 50 square kilometers, including the port operation area of 24 square kilometers, and the maritime industries and the comprehensive logistics zones of 26 square kilometers. The maximum water depth in this area is –28 m, so this area is regarded as one of the best but rare regions for construction of large-sized deep-water terminals. The Western Port Area will consist of 8 operation zones, i.e.: (i) Container Zone; (ii) Liquid Chemical Product Zone; (iii) Break-bulk Cargo Zone; (iv) Conventional Cargo Zone; (v) Crude Oil Zone; (vi) Logistics Zone; (vii) SPR; and (viii) Shipyard Industry Zone. According to the planning, sixty-five berths of 50,000-300,000-DWT are to be built up, and the port is expected to handle cargo of 200 million tons and container of 15 million TEU per annum.

The up-coming Yantai Port welcome all the friends from home and abroad to invest in our port. We are convinced that our cooperation will lead to a common prosperity on a win-win basis.
