Cosco and Rotterdam Forge Agreement 2010/11/16 14:52:07

Cosco Shipping and the Port of Rotterdam Authority have formed a pact to promote steel and heavy lift cargo together.

In the memorandum of understanding they signed, Coscol said it will increase its multipurpose vessel calls to Rotterdam to 24 in 2011, more than twice the rate of 2010. Coscol’s tweendecker multipurpose vessels made two calls in Rotterdam in 2009 and 11 in 2010.

Cosco officials also said they plan to increase breakbulk liner capacity to and from Northwest Europe with between 12 and 16 newbuild ships of 28,000 to 36,000 deadweight tons. Meanwhile, the Port of Rotterdam is spending US$136.7 to expand its breakbulk terminal handling and storage capacity.

Cosco and Rotterdam officials also said they were investigating the possibility of starting a liner service by barge with Germany when steel imports reach a feasible level.
