Railway Cranes Round the Globe

Three rail-mounted cranes manufactured by Kirow AG were recently loaded onto a Rickmers-Linie vessel, the Rickmers Jakarta, at the Wallmann breakbulk terminal in Hamburg for transport to Xingang. The cargoes are expected to arrive on Nov. 24 for use by the Chinese Ministry of Railways. German freight forwarder Küehne & Nagel handled project logistics.

Each railway crane was 64 feet long and weight 167 metric tons. They can be combined to form a block train. This shipment is part of a larger project comprising the transport of 16 railway cranes to China that began last December.

The shipments are using Rickmers-Linie’s eastbound Round-the-World Pearl String service which offers fortnightly sailings from Hamburg, Antwerp and Genoa to Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and China. From there, the ships sail via Japan and South Korea to North America. In New Orleans, Houston and Philadelphia, they load cargo for both Europe and Asia.
