Pinto Terminal Handles First Slabs from Brazil

The first shipment of Brazilian carbon steel slabs was offloaded recently at the Pinto Steel Terminal at the Port of Mobile from the Hermann S, a U-Seabulk vessel.

Three wide-span gantry cranes with a lift capacity of 74 metric tons each were used to offload 2,216 individual slabs, a total of 50,000 metric tons. Premier Bulk Stevedoring provided cargo handling services.

The slabs were manufactured in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, by ThyssenKrupp CSA Siderúrgica do Atlântico and will be processed at the company’s new steel mill north of Mobile, Alabama. Regular shipments are expected to reach three million metric tons a year, according to Alabama State Port Authority.

Prior to this shipment, the terminal handled steel slabs and coils bound for ThyssenKrupp from Germany.
